Brief reports of Primera Liga games played on Saturday:
ALAVES 1 DEPORTIVO CORUNA 0
Alaves looked as though they were going to avoid the drop after the outstanding Rodolfo Bodipo put them ahead 11 minutes from time when he netted after Jose Molina had spilled a fierce shot from fellow striker Nene.
But the prize was snatched from them when Espanyol grabbed their last-gasp win at home to Real Sociedad and the Basque side, who are owned by outspoken entrepreneur Dimitry Piterman, now join Malaga and Cadiz in the second division.
ATLETICO MADRID 1 REAL BETIS 1
An appropriately disappointing match to end the season for two teams that have failed to live up to expectations.
Serbia & Montenegro striker Mateja Kezman ended his recent barren run when he put Atletico in front with a point-blank header after Martin Petrov had slammed a free kick on to the bar.
Betis midfielder Arzu equalised 13 minutes from the end when he drilled in after jinking his way through the Atletico defence from the edge of the area.
CADIZ 5 MALAGA 0
Cadiz bid farewell to the Primera Liga in style with this crushing victory over fellow Andalucians Malaga who will also be playing in the second division next season.
Argentine forward Matias Pavoni put Cadiz in front when he fired home in the first half and midfielder Jonathan Sesma scored twice in the space of a little over a minute to make it 3-0 midway through the second.
Uruguay winger Fabian Estoyanoff scored the fourth when he drilled in on the turn and substitute Nenad Mirosavljevic completed the rout with a neat dinked finish four minutes from time.
CELTA VIGO 1 GETAFE 0
Celta were already assured of a place in next season's UEFA Cup, but they completed an impressive campaign with this efficient win over Bernd Schuster's men.
Chilean defender Pablo Contreras powered a header low inside the far post after a corner midway through the first half.
Getafe, who are guaranteed a creditable ninth-place finish in only their second season in the top flight, were reduced to 10 men when left back Mariano Pernia was sent off in the dying minutes.
ESPANYOL 1 REAL SOCIEDAD 0
King's Cup winners Espanyol escaped relegation by the skin of their teeth after a dramatic stoppage time goal from midfielder Ferran Corominas earned them a priceless win at Montjuic.
Fellow strugglers Alaves looked as they were the team that would avoid the drop after they took a 1-0 lead against Deportivo Coruna, but Corominas's late strike destroyed their hopes of survival and was enough to keep the Catalans up.
REAL MALLORCA 3 REAL ZARAGOZA 1
Mallorca celebrated top flight survival with this comfortable win. Venezuela striker Juan Arango took advantage of some hesitant defending to put the islanders in front after 20 minutes.
Br azilian forward Savio scored in his farewell match for Zaragoza when he fired home from just outside the area to make it 1-1 eight minutes from the break.
But midfielder Francisco Farinos restored Mallorca's lead with a powerful angled shot and substitute Yordi made it 3-1, heading in unopposed after Arango had dinked a pass across the face of the goal.
SEVILLA 3 BARCELONA 2
UEFA Cup winners Sevilla picked up where they had left off after their impressive 4-0 win over Middlesbrough in midweek with a victory over champions Barca that kept alive their hopes of making next season's Champions League.
The Andalucians stormed into a 2-0 lead inside 25 minutes thanks to a long-distance strike from Daniel Alves and an Aitor Ocio penalty.
But quick-fire goals from midfielder Santi Ezquerro and left back Silvinho wiped out the Sevilla lead just before the break.
Sevilla earned a deserved win when striker Kepa scored with a diving header after a corner 14 minutes from time, while Barca were reduced to 10 men when midfielder Gabri was sent off in injury time.
VILLARREAL 2 RACING SANTANDER 0
Villarreal made the most of Deportivo's slip-up against Alaves with a home win that allowed them to leapfrog the Galicians and earn a place in the Intertoto Cup.
Argentine playmaker Juan Roman Riquelme went some way to erasing the memory of his missed penalty against Arsenal in the Champions League semi-final when he smashed home from the spot in the 31st minute after Jose Mari had gone down in the area.
Substitute Xisco Nadal made sure of the victory when he nodded in after great work by Santi Cazorla just after the hour.
