Barcelona brush Galatasaray aside

Barcelona dismissed Galatasaray 3-1 to complete the opening phase of the Champions League with a perfect record and relegate the Turkish side to the bottom of Group H.

Galatasaray, needing a win to stand a chance of advancing to the second phase as runners-up to Barcelona, fell behind in the 10th minute as Dani put the home side ahead.

Cihan Haspolatli's header 10 minutes later gave them hope but Barcelona finally ran out comfortable winners with further goals from Gerard and Geovanni.

Defeat left Galatasaray without so much as a UEFA Cup place as Lokomotiv Moscow finished second thanks to their win over Club Bruges with the Belgians taking third.

Fati Terim's side did have their chances against a Barcelona side missing Juan Roman Riquelme, Patrick Kluivert and Luis Enrique from their attack.

Dani was twice caught offside in the opening minutes before getting his timing right to open the scoring from Geovanni's neat pass.

Faryd Mondragon got a hand to the former Spanish international's strike but could not prevent Barca taking the lead.

Galatasaray were level within 10 minutes, Fabio Pinto showing determination to get a cross in from the left and Haspolatli taking advantage of a mix-up between keeper Robert Enke and his defence to head in unchallenged.

The visitors had Barcelona on the back foot for much of the remainder of the half and after a couple of near misses they were presented with a glaring chance to take the lead five minutes before the break.

Frank de Boer slipped inside the area after taking a pass from Carles Puyol and the ball fell to Elvir Baljic. The former Real Madrid forward had a clear shot on goal with Enke out of position but he blasted wide first time.

Barcelona punished Galatasaray for that let-off as Javier Saviola won a corner in the final minute of the half and Gerard headed in unmarked.

Eleven minutes after the break, Geovanni took a pass from Dani and swept a shot past Mondragon for the third and Galatasaray could find no way back.

The home side passed the ball around at will for long periods before substitute striker Christian caused them a few problems late on, forcing two good saves from Enke.
