Man City through, Man Utd held, all square between Juventus and Real Madrid

Manchester City progressed to the final 16 of the 2013/14 UEFA Champions League courtesy of a 5-2 victory over CSKA Moscow on Tuesday night.

A hat-trick from Alvaro Negredo and a brace from Sergio Aguero guided City into the knockout phase for the first time as they joined reigning champions Bayern Munich in the next stage.

City’s neighbours Manchester United had a tough time of it in Spain, drawing 0-0 with Real Sociedad at the Anoeta Stadium, with Robin van Persie missing from the penalty spot and Marouane Fellaini receiving a late red card.

In the match of the night, Juventus and Real Madrid played out an exciting 2-2 draw in Turin which left the Italian giants at the foot of Group B.

Juventus took the lead late in the first half thanks to a perfectly-placed penalty from Arturo Vidal before Cristiano Ronaldo equalised early in the second half, expertly finishing a clever ball from Karim Benzema.

Madrid edged ahead on the hour-mark when Gareth Bale received a pass from Ronaldo, took control on the edge of the area, then fired home with his trusty left boot, however, Juventus hit back in the 65th minute when Fernando Llorente headed home Martin Caceres’ rightwing cross.

Elsewhere, FC Copenhagen upset Galatasaray 1-0 in Denmark, ten-man Anderlecht held Paris Saint-Germain to a 1-1 draw at Parc des Princes, title holders Bayern Munich edged Viktoria Plzen 1-0 in the Czech Republic, Olympiakos beat Benfica 1-0 in Greece as Shakhtar Donetsk and Bayer Leverkusen played out a 0-0 draw in Ukraine.
