Real Madrid president Florentino Perez is set to offer Keylor Navas a new contract and salary after Monday’s transfer debacle with Manchester United.
Florentino is keen to make amends to starting goalkeeper Keylor Navas after failing to pawn the Costa Rican off to Manchester United in order to buy David De Gea and after apologising to the player upon his arrival back at Valdebebas on Tuesday morning, the club will reportedly offer the former Levante star a contract renewal, which would equal the amount Manchester United would’ve paid him, had the transfer gone through.
According to Spanish television station Cuatro, Florentino and sporting director Jose Angel Sanchez meet with Navas and his agent Ricardo Cabañas on Tuesday in order to smooth over the situation, which essentially forced Navas out of the club, where he proceeded to spend 10 hours in a plane to fly to Manchester, undergo his medical and negotiate terms of his contract, which he signed before he was informed Real Madrid did not submit the paperwork on time and he would have to return to the club.
Other reports in the Spanish media suggest that Navas tried to revive the Manchester United transfer on Wednesday, as the transfer window had yet to close in England, but the Red Devils were no longer interested as they now have four goalkeepers on the active roster.
Cabañas suggested in the meeting that despite Navas’ desire to remain with Real Madrid before being led out the backdoor, Real Madrid should consider paying his client the same terms he’d agreed to with Manchester as a means of assuring the player’s future, at least for this year.
