Iker Casillas is a goalkeeping legend. His performance levels have definitely dropped since his heyday at Real Madrid, but he’s still an icon of the beautiful game.
Last night the Spanish shot stopper helped FC Porto quality for this season’s Champions League by keeping a clean sheet in Italy’s capital as the Portuguese club beat Roma 4-1 on aggregate.
And in doing so, the 35-year-old rewrote more European history.
This current Champions League campaign will be the 18th season that Casillas, who averaged 2.21 saves per game in the competition last term, has featured in.
This feat equals Ryan Giggs’s achievement of 18 consecutive seasons at Manchester United, where the midfielder was part of two Champions League-winning teams.
Casillas lifted the Champions League trophy three times during his 15 years at Real Madrid, so has already overtaken Giggs as far as trophies go.
