Real Madrid 2-1 Celta Vigo: Toni Kroos hits late winner

Toni Kroos' late winner ensured Real Madrid maintained their perfect start to the new season with a 2-1 home victory over battling Celta Vigo.

But the under-strength hosts were made to work hard for their three points after Alvaro Morata's opening goal on the hour was cancelled out by Fabian Orellana's 67th minute equaliser.

Madrid went into this game without several star names, including keeper Keylor Navas, together with attacking trio Isco, Karim Benzama and Cristiano Ronaldo.

Celta Vigo began brightly and Daniel Wass twice tried his luck in quick succession, the first time seeing a shot blocked and then producing a routine save from Kiko Casilla.

Real Madrid struggled to get going in the early exchanges and had to wait until just before the half hour to create their first real opening as Luka Modric saw his 25-yard shot hit the crossbar.

The former Tottenham midfielder was denied by a super stop by Sergio Alvarez minutes later, with Gareth Bale heading inches wide from the resulting corner.

Just as in the first period, it was the visitors who kicked off the second half looking the more likely and Theo Bongonda was unfortunate not to connect with a dangerous looking ball across the face of goal from John Guidetti.

Bale saw a 50th minute shot blocked and then had a penalty claim turned down after going to ground rather dramatically in the area.

The Welsh star's normally expert free-kick skills failed to deliver their usual magic with a wild attempt that flew well off target, although his next set piece produced a decent save from an alert Alvarez, who tipped the effort over via the crossbar.

Madrid finally broke the deadlock in the 60th minute.

Marco Asensio looked seemingly certain to score, only to be denied by the quick thinking of Alvarez.

However, the loose ball came straight to Morata, who was given the benefit of the doubt when the flag stayed down for offside, slotting home with a simple finish.

The woodwork came to the rescue to deny Morata and Madrid a second as his low angled shot hit the post having beaten the keeper.

But Vigo were deservedly back on terms midway through the second half when Guidetti threaded a pass through to Orellana, whose curling 20-yard drive flew beat Casilla to restore parity.

Bale should have had the home side back in front with a header having been set up perfectly by Lucas Vazquez's delivery.

However, Vazquez was again involved moments later with a clever assist which allowed Kroos to sweep in a low shot from the edge of the D into the bottom corner, much to the relief of the edgy Madrid fans in a packed Bernabeu.
