Real Madrid lose 14 players to international duty

Five members of Zinedine Zidane’s outfit have been called up to Julen Lopetegui’s Spain squad.

As usual when LaLiga breaks for international games, the Ciudad Real Madrid training ground in Valdebebas will be fairly empty – with 14 footballers called up to play for their country on this occasion.

This is a lower figure than normal because of injuries, so altogether 10 men will return to training with Zinedine Zidane at 17:00 on Tuesday.

The new Spain coach Julen Lopetegui has picked five from Los Blancos.

Sergio Ramos, Dani Carvajal and Alvaro Morata are familiar names on the squad list but now it also includes Lucas Vazquez, who was also involved in Euro 2016, and Marco Asensio, who moves up from the under-21s.

The Mallorcan’s official debut as a full international could come against Belgium or Liechtenstein.

Also reporting for duty is Marcelo, who has not played for Br azil for a year because of problems with former coach Dunga, but has now returned with enthusiasm.

He will be joined by Casemiro, but new coach Adenor Leonardo Bacchi, better known as Tite, has decided to leave Danilo in Madrid.

As for Croatians Luka Modric and Mateo Kovacic, they are both expected to be in the first of the qualifiers against Turkey in Zagreb.

Furthermore, Pepe will be joining Portugal but Cristiano Ronaldo and Fabio Coentrao will miss out through injuries.

As well as the two Portuguese internationals, three more names are on the casualty list.

Following surgery to his achilles tendon, Keylor Navas misses two games for Costa Rica, who are already through in the CONCACAF qualifying rounds to book their place in Russia.

Karim Benzema is still being vetoed by France coach Didier Deschamps as he does not think the time is right for the forward to rejoin the squad, while Isco has sprained his ankle.
