Real Madrid tops Barcelona for best European academy

The famed La Masia academy misses out on first place in a recent study, with Barca's rivals producing more players currently plying their trade in Europe's top five Leagues.

Real Madrid's academy has produced more talent than Barcelona's famed La Masia, according to a study.

The CIES Football Observatory has released its annual list of the most productive training centres and Los Blancos come out on top for players plying their trade across Europe's top five leagues.

Real Madrid boast 41 players, beating second-placed Barcelona's tally of 37, while Manchester United complete the top three with 34.

Spanish clubs have 11 teams in the top 50 rankings, with four in the top 10 alone, but French teams come on top with 16 representatives in all.

Beyond United, five more English teams feature on the list; Arsenal, Tottenham, Southampton, Chelsea and Manchester City.

When the search is broadened across top divisions in 31 different European leagues, Ajax shoot up from joint-50th to first, with 72 current and former players represented.
