According to Spanish transfer outlet Don Balon, Madrid are looking into a swap deal involving Varane and De Gea.
The defender is said to be a huge admirer of Red Devils boss Jose Mourinho, having played under him during his time in Spain.
And Real will use that to try and land former Atletico Madrid ace De Gea.
They know United will not accept a straight swap involving goalkeeper Keylor Navas.
United star De Gea is a long-term target for the Spanish giants, with a late fax stopping a move to Old Trafford in 2015.
