Getafe, A Complicated Derby for Real Madrid

Getafe is a town near Madrid, only 10 kilometres south from the Spanish capital.

Many Real Madrid and Atlético Madrid fans live in the south of the region, because the team didn’t have a great tradition in Spanish football. However, since they were firstly promoted to Primera Division in 2004, the Azulones (Blue Team) only were relegated once, two seasons ago.

Despite Getafe is not a big team in Spanish football, they’ve achieved great things in the last years. They were able to reach twice the Copa del Rey final. In one of these years, Getafe thrashed FC Barcelona (4-0) in their stadium. Besides, they also played in Europe, almost knocking out Bayern Munich in 2008. Luca Toni avoided the humiliation in the last minute.

For Real Madrid it wasn’t an easy stadium neither. Their first visit was in 2004 and Los Blancos lost (2-1) due to the goals scored by Albiol and Riki, whereas Solari found the net for the Galácticos. In 2005 (1-0) and in 2008 (3-1), Real Madrid also lost at Coliseum Alfonso Pérez, whereas in 2006 they could only draw (1-1). In 2012, Los Blancos were also defeated despite taking the lead (2-1) with a goal scored by Higuaín.

Since that visit, Los Blancos have won all the games, including their last trip in 2016 (1-5). As you can see, this is a very tough ground for Los Blancos, although the stadium was named after a former Real Madrid player, Alfonso Pérez.

Actually, the ground is the fifth with worst results for Los Blancos in La Liga after Camp Nou (FC Barcelona), Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán (Sevilla), Estadio de la Cerámica (Villarreal) and Riazor (Deportivo La Coruña).

This season, Getafe were able to put in difficulties both FC Barcelona and Sevilla. Both giants won the game in the last minutes of the game. Besides, Villarreal were thrashed (4-0) in the last game played in that stadium.
