Real Madrid are reportedly keen on the transfer of Inter Milan striker Mauro Icardi as an ideal replacement for Karim Benzema up front.
According to Don Balon, the Argentina international is emerging as a top target for Los Blancos and the club feel they could get him for £97million or less.
One of the most clinical finishers in Europe at the moment, Icardi scored 29 goals in 36 games in all competitions last season and it’s easy to see why a club like Real would be interested.
Benzema, by contrast, looks past his best and scored only five times in La Liga last term, though he showed some superior form in the Champions League, opening the scoring in the final win over Liverpool.
One imagines Icardi would be an upgrade at this point, however, with the 25-year-old at the peak of his powers and surely ready for a big move to win some silverware – something that’s eluded him in his career so far.
Madrid may have won the Champions League again last season but it does look like changes are needed at the club if they are to improve on their third place finish in La Liga.
