Neymar told to seal Real Madrid transfer to catch Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo

Neymar has been told to leave Paris Saint-Germain and improve the consistency of his output if he wants to catch up to Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.

The Br azilian scored a hat-trick as PSG swatted aside Red Star Belgrade at the Parc des Princes in the Champions League last night.

Neymar netted two stunning free-kicks as part of his treble but saw his efforts in a 6-1 win overshadowed by former Barcelona team-mate Messi later on in the same evening.

The Argentine ace scored twice, hit the post twice and was the driving force in Barca’s outclassed Tottenham at Wembley.

Neymar joined compatriot Kaka as the joint-highest Br azilian goalscorer in the history of the Champions League on 30 goals and earned huge praise from PSG full-back Thomas Meunier who said: "It was the great Neymar, as he has already proved in the past."

But despite his numbers in France, the Real Madrid-linked wide-man has been told he needs to leave Paris if he wants to truly join Messi and Neymar in the running for the game’s big awards.

Neymar has 10 goals and three assists in nine Ligue 1 and Champions League clashes this term having contributed 28 goals and 16 assists in just 30 games across all competitions in his first season.

Yet the 26-year-old is still considered a few rungs below Barca’s Messi and Juventus striker Ronaldo and is not expected to be one of the three finalists for this year’s Ballon d’Or.

Claiming individual prizes such as the highly-coveted end-of-year award was believed to be one of Neymar’s main motivations when he left Barca for PSG in the summer of 2017 for a world-record £198million.

And Sky Sports pundit and former Premier League midfielder Steve Sidwell told The Debate that Neymar needs to move to a more competitive league to contend with Messi and Ronaldo and be regarded as one of the best players in the world.

"For him to be in that bracket, he needs to be consistent and he needs to do it week-in, week-out," Sidwell said.

"He needs to come out of that French league as well. You can’t be doing it there, you can’t compare them."

"You can’t compare the likes of what Ronaldo and Messi have done at the highest level, obviously Ronaldo has done it in the Premier League, Champions League."

"Neymar’s gone to the French league to try and be the best there. Yes he scored a hat-trick but it’s nowhere near a patch on the other two."

"For him to do that, he needs to do it week-in, week-out."

Neymar has long been linked with a big-money move to Real Madrid with club president Florentino Perez said to be keen to make him his next major addition.

French publication Le10 Sport even suggested last month that Neymar’s father has spoken to the Spanish giants to agree a deal in principle for Neymar to return to La Liga next summer.

Real Madrid had to release a public statement denying any plans to bid for Neymar a few months ago, insisting: "The two clubs enjoy an excellent relationship and, as such, if Real Madrid were at any stage to consider securing the services of a PSG player, they would approach the club in the first instance."
