1988: Plays for Germany in European championships

1990: Plays in German side that win the World Cup after beating Argentina 1-0

1992: Member of German side that finished runners-up to Denmark in European championships in Sweden.

1994: Member of German squad for USA World Cup. Blamed by coach Berti Vogts for shock defeat against Bulgaria in quarter-finals.

Announced retirement from international football after winning 54 caps

1996: After 322 Bundesliga games for Cologne joins Real Madrid for $2.70 million on the recommendation of coach Fabio Capello.

Keeps a clean sheet on his league debut in 2-0 victory against Hercules.

1997: Wins league title and Spanish Supercup with Real Madrid. Plays 40 league games and concedes 31 goals

1998: Wins the Champions League, beating Juventus 1-0 in the final, and the World Club Cup, against Vasco de Gama.

1999: Signs new three-year contract with Real Madrid.

Loses place to Albano Bizarri and then Iker Casillas. Plays only five games in an injury-plagued 1999-2000 season.

2000: Casillas plays in Champions League final victory over Valencia.

September: Relegated to third choice keeper after Real sign Cesar from Valladolid.

2001: Plays no league, cup or European games in 2000-2001 season.

June: Club announce agreement to end player's contract with effect from June 30. Played 86 games for Real conceding a total of 102 goals.
