Transfer rumours

Newcastle eye out-of-contract Real Madrid man Kiko Casilla

Newcastle could be busy in the January window as a reported takeover hits the headlines.

Italian outlet CalcioMercato has claimed that Newcastle United are interested in signing Real Madrid goalkeeper Kiko Casilla in the January transfer window, as his contract expires at the end of the season.

The report states that the 32-year-old stopper is free to leave the Santiago Bernabeu, after becoming third choice with the Spanish giants in the summer. That is due to the signing of Thibaut Courtois, while Keylor Navas warms the bench.

The one-time Spain international is available for nothing at the end of the season, and Real are willing to wave goodbye to the player they bought in the summer of 2015 from La Liga side Espanyol.

As a non-Spanish club, Newcastle are able to land Casilla on a pre-contract basis under the Bosman ruling. That would see The Toon land the goalkeeper in the summer - however, they may look to complete a cut-price deal in January.

Rafa Benitez boasts four goalkeepers at his disposal in Freddie Woodman, Karl Darlow, Rob Elliot and Martin Dubravka, but the latter has been linked with a move to Italian champions Juventus.

It remains to be seen if Newcastle will be involved in any transfer business whatsoever in the January window, with owner Mike Ashley claiming he has never been closer to selling the club and a deal could be reached within weeks.

But it appears that Benitez wants to raid his former club for Casilla, with doubts over the future of Dubravka.
