Easy for Real Madrid in Spanish Copa del Rey

Real Madrid cruised into the last 16 of the Spanish Copa del Rey on Thursday night as they beat third tier Melilla 6-1.

With a 4-0 win from the first leg, Real Madrid were always expected to qualify and coach Santiago Solari rested the majority of his regular starters and gave a chance to youngsters and players who have not had minutes on a regular basis.

Marco Asensio, who has struggled for form this season, scored twice, and Isco, who was making his first start since Solari replaced Julen Lopetegui, also scored two excellent goals, while Vinicius Jr and Javi Sanchez also got their names on the scoresheet.

Gaizka Garitano got off to a winning start as the new coach at Athletic Club Bilbao as two goals each from the Aritz Aduriz and Inaki Williams gave the Basque side a 4-0 win away to Huesca to add to their 4-0 win from the home leg.

Late goals from Jorge Moreno and Rafael Dwamena saw Levante through 2-0 against Lugo, while Sporting Gijon became the only lower league side to make it into the last 16 following a 2-2 draw away to Eibar, which gave them a 4-2 aggregate win.

Wednesday night saw Barcelona, Atletico Madrid, Sevilla and Valencia all book their places in the last 16 with the draw to be made on Friday.
