Marco Asensio taking steps towards recovery

Real Madrid midfielder Marco Asensio has made steps towards his recovery after undergoing surgery on his left knee.

The Spanish midfielder, who ruptured his Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) during Los Blancos’ pre-season win over Arsenal in America last month, will miss the majority of the 2019-20 campaign through the untimely injury.

A damaged ACL is known to be one of the most serious injuries a footballer can sustain, with the recovery taking a minimum of 6-8 months – in some cases a full year.

It was a huge blow to both Asensio and Madrid, who viewed the 23-year-old as an established first-team player for the coming season.

Asensio scored six goals and provided nine assists in 44 overall appearances for Real last term, per Transfermarkt, so will be a big miss for Zinedine Zidane’s side as they look to clinch their first league title in three years this time out. Indeed, he averaged the 6th most dribbles in the team last season and the third most crosses in the league per game so it’s clear he could provide something to the frontline.

After undergoing surgery two weeks ago, the Spain international updated supporters with his recovery progress by posting a short clip of him walking on his Twitter page.

The midfielder is seen slowly walking with the aid of crutches by his swimming pool at home, posting the clip alongside the caption:

"Two weeks since the operation. Step by step I continue to make progress in recovery. Thanks for the support. We continue! Two weeks since the operation. Step by step I advance in my healing. Thanks for the support. We keep on!"

Asensio’s employers got off to a perfect start last weekend, beating Celta Vigo 3-1 in their opening La Liga tie away from home.

19-year-old Vinicius Junior and outcast Gareth Bale lined up either side of frontman Karim Benzema without the missing Asensio and Eden Hazard – who is ruled out with a thigh injury – with Lucas Vazquez in contention to be handed a start by Zidane this weekend following his goal against Celta Vigo.

According to the Telegraph, Asensio’s injury was one of the reasons Bale’s move to China was called off so his eventual return to the side would seem to suggest the Welshman would fall further down the pecking order once again.
