“Odegod” as we so adeptly call our Norwegian wonder-kid within the Managing Madrid community, has apparently impressed new club Real Sociedad right from the first training session. Spanish publication, Marca, report that Odegaard’s wand of a left foot and incredible self-discipline were both apparent to the Sociedad staff almost immediately upon his arrival. Real Sociedad, after just one session, knew they had a bright talent on their books.
More surprising than his technical ability, was his strong mentality and impressive fitness levels. On last week’s Loan Tracker podcast, Kiyan Sobhani and I commented on Odegaard’s relentless engine away to Valencia. That was on full display again this weekend vs Mallorca as the Norwegian’s lung busting run in the 82nd minute is what helped secure the three points for the visitor’s.
In the past, Odegaard has referenced how important it was to train with the Real Madrid first team, specifically Cristiano Ronaldo. His self-discipline and focus on fitness as well as recovery after matches has drawn parallels to the Portuguese. Data collected by Real Sociedad’s fitness teams revealed Martin as the fittest in the squad and that he consistently runs more than his team-mates.
Due to both his supreme technical quality and strong fitness levels, he has started the season on fire. In a long draining La Liga campaign, it will be interesting to see if he can keep his level of play consistent over 38 match days. We will be sure to keep track of his progress along the way.
