Referee Apologises To Sergio Ramos At Half-Time After The Most Bizarre Yellow Card

Spain captain Sergio Ramos received an undeserved yellow card during last night's European qualifier against Romania.

The 33-year-old opened the scoring with a trademark penalty after Dani Ceballos was fouled, and to celebrate making it 1-0, he performed a goggle celebration, where he mimicked wearing glasses.

But moments later, to the utter bemusement of Ramos, referee Deniz Aytekin produced a yellow card because he thought the defender was "gesturing to the stands."

Ramos explained after the full-time whistle that his celebration was actually in tribute to his nephew, who coincidentally wears glasses.

He basically wanted to cheer him up, but the official spoiled the party by brandishing an undeserved yellow.

The Spanish defender confirmed that Aytekin apologised to him at half-time for his mistake. "The yellow card came from some confusion." the Real Madrid centre-back said.

"It was for my nephew. We both wear glasses and it was for him. I did it to cheer him up, to dedicate the goal to him."

"The referee thought I was gesturing to the stands."

Aside from the above incident, Spain secured all three points against Romania thanks to the heroics of goalkeeper Kepa.

Ramos opened the scoring in the 29th minute and just after half-time, Borussia Dortmund striker Paco Alcacer made it 2-0 with a tidy finish.

But the Romanians didn't give up. Florin Andone made it 2-1 in the 59th minute and Cosmin Contra's side pressed for an equaliser in the remaining minutes of the game.

They almost made it 2-2 but Chelsea shot stopper Arrizabalaga made a truly incredible save in injury time to secure the win.
