Zidane reveals what annoyed him the most as PSG thrash Real Madrid in Champions League

Real Madrid lost 3-0 to PSG in their Champions League group-stage opener.

Real Madrid boss Zinedine Zidane was angry with the performance of his players as he saw he side lose to a Paris Saint-Germain team that had second-string attacking line-up.

PSG were without Neymar, Kylian Mbappe and Edinson Cavani for the game at the Parc des Princes on Wednesday night, while Zidane began with an attacking trio of Eden Hazard, Gareth Bale and Karim Benzema.

Angel di Maria grabbed a brace against his former club, while Thomas Meunier scored a sublime stoppage-time goal made it look more like a training session rather than a Champions League clash.

And the manner of the defeat upset Zidane, who aimed his frustration at his players at the final whistle.

"They were better than us in every department," Zidane said.

"In the play, in midfield, and the thing that annoys me most is the intensity."

"It's difficult if you don't start strongly."

"They are good at creating chances, that's not what worries me, it's seeing my team without the necessary intensity at the high level of this competition."

"We knew they'd pressure us but we didn't really get properly into the game at any stage."

"Intensity is the most important thing on the pitch."

"You can have your worst game, but if you play with intensity, put your foot in, win challenges, you can win the game - but we didn't."

At 2-0 down Madrid thought they had got back into the game after a fantastic piece of individual play from Bale, which ended with the Welshman lobbing Navas from the edge of the box, however, after the video assistant referee reviewed the goal it was deemed the 30-year-old had handled the ball.

And VAR also ruled out Benzema's effort late in the second half for being offside.

Real’s keeper Thibaut Courtois was caught out at his near post by Di Maria for the opening goal of the game, but wasn’t to blame for the second, which was a screamer from the edge of the dos just past the half-hour mark.

However, Zidane refused to single out individuals in his criticism of his side's performance.

"We scored two goals but they were ruled out by VAR," he added.

"We didn't really ever get going. Here we are all in the same boat."

"When we win, we all win. When we lose, we all lose."

"This defeat is hard to take, but we have another game on Sunday [against Sevilla] and need to focus on that."
