Real Madrid defender’s future with club ‘in serious doubt’

Alvaro Odriozola is the only backup option for veteran standout Dani Carvajal at right back, but Real Madrid have not used the young defender since his disastrous showing against RCD Mallorca.

Real Madrid have one of the best defenses in Europe, as they have settled down after a 3-0 loss to PSG and a 2-2 draw with Club Brugge in their first two Champions League matchups. In their last two Champions League ties, Real have shut out Galatasaray and are currently riding a streak of five straight clean sheets.

When Los Blancos last conceded a goal, they did so on Oct. 19 in a meltdown-causing 1-0 loss to relegation candidates RCD Mallorca. Alvaro Odriozola and James Rodriguez both shared the blame for the goal, but Odriozola later became the scapegoat. Whereas James created a few clear-cut chances from set pieces, Odriozola committed a careless challenge for a red card that put Real down to 10 men and sealed their fate as the losers in this match.

Since this debacle in Mallorca, Odriozola has not registered a single minute for Real Madrid. Zinedine Zidane has consistently dropped him from the squad, making it seem like the young right back has no future with the club.

In fact, MARCA’s J.I. Garcia-Ochoa relays that Odriozola’s future with Los Blancos “is in serious doubt”, because Real are juxtaposing his unconvincing displays in 2019-2020 with Achraf Hakimi’s goal-scoring heroics for Borussia Dortmund. Hakimi has been one of the Bundesliga’s most exciting players since joining Lucien Favre’s side on loan, dazzling in the attack and scoring important goals. He’s been one of the best players in the Champions League this season.

While Odriozola’s had his moments, including an assist for the 4-2 goal in an October win over Granada, he’s been mediocre at best this season. In short, Odriozola hasn’t looked like the promising young prospect that Real spent 40 million euros on as a purchase from Real Sociedad.

Instead, Odriozola has looked a step below “Real Madrid quality” and does not look like the heir apparent to Dani Carvajal’s throne. Perhaps this sentiment could change if Odriozola shows great form, but it doesn’t seem like Real want to give him that chance. He hasn’t played in over a month, so it appears he is either on a short leash or Real have already made up their minds.

Per MARCA, it looks like Real are prepared to sell Odriozola next summer and cut their losses. By then, Los Blancos will receive Hakimi from his Dortmund loan spell and will rotate him with Carvajal on the right side. Their situation at left back is more than settled with Ferland Mendy, Marcelo, and Sevilla’s Sergio Reguilon all excelling to varying degrees this season.

However, Odriozola has been the odd man out as a fullback struggling for form with Real Madrid. He has ability and is only 23, but a different level of quality is expected in a White kit. It looks like Florentino Perez and Zinedine Zidane do not believe the Spanish international can provide that requisite quality.
