Benfica 'very keen on January swoop for out-of-favour Real Madrid striker Mariano Diaz'

Benfica are interested in signing Real Madrid forward Mariano Diaz this January transfer window.

The Spanish-Dominican forward has featured sparingly for the La Liga giants since rejoining the club from French side Lyon for a €23 million fee eighteen months ago.

And Portuguese newspaper O Jogo say that Benfica, who won Portugal's Primeria Division last season, are extremely keen on a move for Mariano, who is reportedly valued at €20 million.

Mariano has totalled just 44 minutes of football for Real so far this season, with both of his competitive apperances for the Spanish club coming in the Spanish Super Cup earlier this month.

While Real went on to win the competition in Saudi Arabia, beating local rivals Atletico Madrid on penalties in the final, Zidane opted to leave regular front three members Karim Benzema, Eden Hazard and Gareth Bale at home.

With Zidane's side returning to La Liga action this weekend when they host Sevilla at the Bernabeu on Saturday, Mariano is expected to pushed back down the pecking order.

It was Real's legendary French manager who promoted Mariano to the Los Blancos first-team squad back in 2016, and the forward played eight times in the club's title-winning La Liga season in 2016/17.

Mariano then moved to Lyon for €8 million and immediately hit a run of form in the French top-flight, scoring 18 times in 34 league appearances for OL.

That prompted Real, who were managed by Julen Lopetegui at the time, to re-sign the Spanish-Dominican forward at the start of the 2018/19 season.

The club's plans for him were so promising that Mariano was given the number 7 shirt at the Santiago Bernabeu, which had just been vacated by all-time record goalscorer Cristiano Ronaldo.

Mariano's 'second debut' at the club saw him score a stunning long-range goal in the Champions League against Roma in a 3-0 win, but the forward has gone on to feature on 20 more times in all competitions since then.

The number 7 shirt was stripped from Mariano at the start of this season following Real's high-profile acquisition of Eden Hazard from Chelsea in June.

This has prompted Benfica to contemplate making a move for the forward, with the Portuguese club sitting top of the Primeria Division and competing in the last-32 of the Europa League next month.
