Lucas Vazquez: “I hope I can retire as a Real Madrid player”

The winger answered questions from the fans for Bleacher Report.

Real Madrid attacker Lucas Vazquez talked to Bleacher Report and shared his thoughts about his future, his idol growing up and the first penalty in the shootout against Atletico de Madrid for Real’s 11th Champions League title.

"It was beautiful to grow up in Real Madrid’s academy, although there were some tough moments as well. It was a great experience and even more so after achieving the dream of every single Fabrica player, which is to play for the first team. I hope I can retire as a Real Madrid player," said Vazquez.

The Spanish winger took Real Madrid’s first penalty in 2016’s Champions League Final shootout against Atletico. Nobody expected to see Vazquez taking Madrid’s first penalty yet he did so with confidence.

"I asked to take the first one because I was very confident, I had felt very well during the game and in that moment I was only thinking about scoring the penalty. I was just thinking about that so that I could help my team win the title. I was lucky and the ball hit the back of the net," he explained.

As a pure right winger, Vazquez grew up watching and trying to replicate Luis Figo’s game.

"I’d say Luis Figo is my biggest idol, I grew up watching him play for Real Madrid. He played in my position and I have always watched videos of him to improve my game through his own moves," he said.

Vazquez was also asked about Cristiano Ronaldo and his somewhat surprising departure from the club.

"He’s a true pro and he demanded the best from himself and from his teammates, something which forced us to be better players. We have to understand his decisions, every player has to follow his own path," explained Vazquez, who also praised team captain Sergio Ramos.

" Ramos is the toughest player I’ve ever faced, he has a competitive nature and he’s the world’s greatest in his position. He’s very competitive and intense day to day. He leads by example and he’s the captain, as he always proves," concluded Vazquez.

It hasn’t been an easy season for Vazquez, even after the injury to Marco Asensio which gave him a chance to become a regular for Madrid. However, his commitment and love for the club is still there and it’s clear that he’s extremely happy about playing for his lifelong club.
