Eden Hazard showed he fits Los Blancos

Real Madrid left winger Eden Hazard spent most of the 2019-2020 season injured, but when he was healthy, he showed he’s a perfect fit for Los Blancos.

Going forward, Zinedine Zidane will be able to build Real Madrid into his image, using a “Revolution” of young talent to return Los Blancos to European dominance. Los Merengues’ biggest signing in Zidane’s first summer transfer window in his second stint with the club, Eden Hazard showed he can be one of the centerpiece players in Real’s attack.

In the summer 2020 transfer window, Real Madrid will need to find a new top scorer. But in Hazard, they have a legitimate superstar creator, who can take defenders on, produce scoring opportunities, and, most importantly, take counterattacks to the next level. And under Zidane, Real figure to become more of a counterattacking team in 2020-2021.

Hazard missed most of the 2019-2020 season with two serious injuries. Before that, it took him some time to get healthy and settled into the squad. But by the time November rolled around, Hazard was a menace, destroying La Liga and Champions League defenses with his unique skills.

Per WhoScored.com, the Belgian star was Real’s second-highest rated player in La Liga last season. Hazard averaged an astounding 3.9 dribbles per game and 3.5 fouls drawn per game in La Liga, as he was by far the team’s best player at creating something from nothing with his dribbling. A key ball-progressor in counterattacks, Hazard also averaged 1.4 key passes per game to lead all wingers by a margin of 0.5 key passes per game.

In 2020-2021, Madridistas should see the best of Hazard at the Santiago Bernabeu. He’ll be healthy and already have familiarity with the rest of his teammates built-in. When he was in the lineup, Karim Benzema had his best patch of form, and depending on how the summer transfer window unfolds, Hazard could have an even better scorer to feed.

On top of all that, the supporting cast around Hazard in midfield will be improved. Isco was clicking and playing world-class football again by the end of the 2019-2020 season, looking like Los Blancos’ best attacking player after Hazard’s second injury. Hazard and Isco could have a lethal connection in the final third, and attacking fullbacks Achraf Hakimi and Sergio Reguilon will add firepower for the wide players that can lead to more goals for Hazard, Rodrygo Goes, and others.

With his ability to start counterattacks, win fouls in key areas that lead to deadly set pieces from Toni Kroos for the likes of Sergio Ramos to finish (or for Isco or Kroos to score themselves), and ability to beat defenders at will, Hazard is the dynamic left winger who makes everyone better. He fits Real Madrid’s identity under Zidane with his relentless work down the left.
