Transfer rumours

Man Utd surprisingly agree to James Rodriguez transfer negotiations - but on one condition

Manchester United could make a surprise signing in the form of Real Madrid star James Rodriguez when the transfer window reopens at the end of the season.

Manchester United have surprisingly agreed to head to the James Rodriguez negotiating table but only if Real Madrid allow him to leave for cheap, reports say. Zinedine Zidane is keen to offload the Colombia international, whose stock has fallen drastically in recent times. But Everton, as well as United, are interested too.

Manchester United have been linked with Real Madrid star Rodriguez for years.

Sir Alex Ferguson wanted to bring the player to Old Trafford back in the summer of 2010 having watched the Colombia international shine at Porto.

In the end that didn’t happen, with Rodriguez going on to join Monaco.

He made the blockbuster move to Real Madrid in 2014 shortly after his exploits at the World Cup in Br azil, where he finished as the top scorer with six goals from five matches - including a belter against Uruguay.

However, in recent years, he’s toiled.

Rodriguez endured a miserable time at Bundesliga Bayern Munich, failing to establish himself during his two-year loan spell at the Allianz Arena.

And he’s struggled for minutes at Real this season with the likes of Luka Modric, Casemiro, Toni Kroos, Federico Valverde and Isco all ahead of him in ZIdane’s pecking order.

Now, Diario Madridista claim United have agreed to head to the Rodriguez negotiating table at the end of the campaign.

But that’s only on the condition that Real let him go for cheap.

United have moved away from spending huge money on big players in recent years having had their fingers burned by the likes of Angel Di Maria, Radamel Falcao and Bastian Schweinsteiger.

Real reportedly are ‘realistic’ about transfer negotiations and believe they may have to part ways with the Colombian for less than they’d ideally like.

But United aren’t the only team interested in securing the signature of the 28-year-old, with Everton and Atletico Madrid very much in the frame for his signing too.

Everton boss Carlo Ancelotti managed Rodriguez at both Real and Bayern earlier in his career and could reunite with the playmaker at Goodison Park.

And Atletico are seeking more creativity as they look to create more chances for the likes of Joao Felix, Diego Costa and Alvaro Morata.

Meanwhile, speaking in April, former Colombia star Tino Asprilla urged Rodriguez to seal a move to United when the transfer window reopens.

He said: "James needs to go where they put him to play, where the coach asks, wants, not where the President’s whim is."

"With his football he can play anywhere."

"United is a good place for James, they haven’t won titles in a while and they plan to build a good team for next season."

"They have good players, there is the Spanish Juan Mata, and it is for that style of James, in fact he is more dynamic, he has more punch, he could calmly succeed in that team."
