It looks like Los Blancos want to sell the young left-back.
Sergio Reguilon’s brilliant season with Sevilla hasn’t been enough to convince Real Madrid of his chances to compete with Ferland Mendy for the starting spot in the near future and Los Blancos are hoping to earn around €20 million for his transfer, according to a report from MARCA.
Madrid could also try to extend Reguilon’s loan deal with Sevilla if the right offer doesn’t come their way, but their initial plan is to sell the Spanish defender and cash in after what’s been a breakout season for him.
It’s important to note that the club seems to be thinking about including an option to bring the player back by having the ability to match any potential offer for him. That’s not exactly like a regular buyback option, which would be more useful for Madrid considering that Marcelo’s contract expires in 2021.
While Mendy appears to be the long-term solution for the left-back spot, it would be very important to have a quality backup who could also compete for the starting job, and Reguilon seems ready for that kind of role.
That’s precisely why it wouldn’t make much sense to sell Reguilon, even if extending his current loan deal until Marcelo’s contract expires would be reasonable.
