Real Madrid midfielder Luka Modric is willing to reduce his salary if that allows him to get a contract extension with the club, according to a report from MARCA. His current deal expires in the summer of 2021 and Madrid will be monitoring his performances this season before making a decision, per that same report.
While Modric showed signs of decline early in the 2019-2020 season, his surprisingly good performances for Madrid after the pandemic and early in the 2020-2021 campaign have proven that he might still have fuel left in the tank.
The situation with Modric’s contract is similar to Sergio Ramos’ own. Both players are starting and performing at a high level even though they are 35 and 34 years old. Nobody in the current roster seems to be able to compete with them for a spot in the starting lineup and that will likely force Real Madrid’s hand.
It’s clear that both Ramos and Modric are going to decline sooner rather than later, which means that Madrid’s intention of giving them a one-year extension is reasonable. However, if the two players are willing to decrease their salaries and potentially accept a less-relevant role during the 2022-2023 season, it would also make sense for Madrid to sign that two-year contract with them and keep them in the club, even if only to teach the young players.
