Jurgen Klopp makes 'ridiculous' Liverpool claim after Real Madrid defeat

Liverpool missed a host of chances as they drew 0-0 with Real Madrid and were eliminated in the Champions League quarter-finals.

Jurgen Klopp was left to rue Liverpool's first-leg performance after they tumbled out of the Champions League to Real Madrid at Anfield.

After a 3-1 defeat in the Spanish capital last week, the Reds were left with an uphill battle for the return game at home on Wednesday night and were unable to break down their visitors.

Despite chances for Gini Wijnaldum, Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah, the 13-time Champions League winners held out for a goalless draw at Anfield, sealing their place in the last four as a result.

Klopp was happy with the overall performance on Wednesday but lamented missed chances and that loss in Madrid last week.

He said: “We didn’t lose the game tonight, we lost it in Madrid that is clear. The level of performance today was good enough and had we gone 1-0 up it would have been a different game "

"It was uncomfortable for Madrid, we were good, we were aggressive, we played some really good stuff, had massive chances in the beginning of the game "

"If we take one of them, it opens up. They had already struggles, it would have increased that. But if and when isn’t interesting because we didn’t score and then with the experience of Real Madrid they slowed it down "

"We've had ridiculous games here where we should have won, not tonight, but in the Premier League, where we just didn’t finish "

"Many times Mo Salah would finish this type of thing. We had so many situations and we could have created more because the football we played was better "

Klopp brought on Thiago Alcantara and Diogo Jota in the second half before adding Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Xherdan Shaqiri later on.

The Liverpool boss thought his side were attempting to force the issue too much in the second half, though, as they went in search of the two goals that would take them through.

"Second half we made the changes and the timing was maybe not right " he added. "We wanted fresh legs but we lost a bit of rhythm in these moments, we tried a bit too hard "

"In the beginning we didn’t try in these moments to pass the ball around their box. We needed the width "

"Tonight it was OK, but we are out anyway. We love this competition and it is for different reasons very important for this club "

"Now we can concentrate unfortunately on the Premier League, but we will "

"Monday night at Leeds is the next challenge, they are leading on all the physical stats in the Premier League, so we will have to run our socks off."
