Fabian Rieder on Real Madrid radar

La Liga giants Real Madrid are reportedly considering 19-year-old Swiss midfielder Fabian Rieder as a long-term successor to Casemiro.

According to a report by Spanish outlet Defensa Central, Fabian Rieder is the subject of interest from Real Madrid over a possible move in a future transfer window. The Spanish giants are scouting the 19-year-old Swiss midfielder as a potential long-term successor to Casemiro.

Fabian Rieder spent his formative years with three Swiss clubs before graduating from the BSC Young Boys academy in 2020. The teenage prodigy joined Young Boys in July 2017 before swiftly progressing through the ranks and making his first-team bow for the club in October 2020, aged just 18.

In the last 15 months, the 19-year-old has come leaps and bounds, making 59 appearances across all competitions while chipping in with four goals and eight assists along the way. Rieder’s progress has not gone unnoticed, with Real Madrid closely monitoring his development for quite some time now.

The Spanish giants are determined to have a succession plan in place for their ageing stalwarts. To that end, the highly sought-after Erling Haaland is reportedly their priority option to succeed Karim Benzema. At the same time, several creative midfielders have also emerged on Real Madrid’s radar to replace Luka Modric and Toni Kroos in due course.

Amid all the scouting for the successors for Benzema, Modric and Kroos, the Merengues are also keeping a close eye on possible replacement options for Casemiro. The Br azilian is 29 years old at the moment, but he does not have a viable alternative in the Real Madrid squad, meaning the burden on him is enormous.

The La Liga heavyweights have already been linked with plenty of midfielders, with Aurelien Tchouameni becoming a key target for Real Madrid lately. The latest midfielder to pop up on Real Madrid’s is Fabian Rieder, with Juni Calafat, the club’s head of international football, receiving glowing reports on him.

Interestingly, Rieder is not a natural holding midfielder and has played as a box-to-box midfielder for most of his short career to date. But with Real Madrid viewing something special in him, he could well end up succeeding Casemiro in the years to come. For now, the Swiss midfielder will continue to be scouted by Los Blancos.
