Playing for Real Madrid is like being on another dimension for Alaba and Mbappe

Frenchman looks on his way to joining Los Blancos.

In David Alaba, we may be looking at one of Real Madrid's most profitable signings in decades.

He arrived in the midst of a storm at the club, with Sergio Ramos and Raphael Varane just having left, but the Austrian defender has certainly proven his worth since moving to the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu and softened the blow of losing the club legends.

Alaba showed the world last Wednesday against Paris Saint-Germain that a player can be decisive without appearing in attack or without scoring the winning goal.

He was a leader, from minute one to minute 90 and he lifted the crowd when they were flat.

He lifted Eder Militao when he was close to asking for a substitution, he lifted the famous chair in the celebration of Karim Benzema's hat-trick goal, but above all he stepped up at the right time and that helped Real Madrid progress deeper into Europe's top competition.

With the score at 1-0 to PSG, a simple step forward by the Austrian led to Mbappe being offside, rendering Neymar's pass and the Frenchman's subsequent goal ineffective, in what was one of the many special moments he's produced at the club.

Watching Alaba play makes one wonder how he could have left the all-dominant Bayern Munich to join Real Madrid.

The answer is simple: he knew that to improve and to play for a bigger club he only had one way and that was to play for Real Madrid, say those around him about his decision to leave behind the German giants and other better economic offers or other teams like Barcelona, Chelsea and PSG.

Alaba and Mbappe are writing the same story. Both decided that Real Madrid were for them, saying no to renewal offers from both Bayern and PSG respectively.

The Frenchman's move has been in the pipeline for years and is close to completion. What he experienced at the Bernabeu was the final straw at PSG and the deal will be completed next week. The defender's deal was a slow burner once his decision to leave Bayern was firm and recognised by the Bavarian club in December 2020.

These are two players who can contribute to any side on the planet, and are able to make decisions not just based on money, but footballing prestige.

They could both have the pick of any starting eleven on the planet, and have chosen Real Madrid.

They've both chosen to change clubs so that they can see what it's like to play for a side that's won a record 13 Champions League titles.

Both left (Mbappe shortly) two big clubs and have done so without betraying them. One didn't reach an agreement with Bayern, with Real Madrid in mind, and the other asked to be transferred so that PSG could get a return on their investment in him.

A lot has been said about Mbappe, but the Alaba deal will go down in Real Madrid history. It will do so in terms of cost, performances and something as intangible as leadership, which he has shown since he arrived at the Bernabeu in the summer.
