Luke Modric is set to finish his career at Real Madrid after agreeing a new deal with the club, according to reports.

Modric has spent the past decade in the Spanish capital, but his current contract was set to expire in June.

However, he has agreed to extend his stay until 2023, with the option of a further 12 months if he continues to perform well, as reported by AS.

It is understood that Modric wishes to end his playing days at the Bernabeu, and this now appears likely.

If he remains at Real Madrid until 2024, he will be less than three months shy of his 39th birthday, although he has previously hinted at potentially playing until he is 40.

When he does eventually hang up his boots, it has been claimed Los Blancos will offer him an opportunity to work behind-the-scenes as part of the club's sporting structure.

Modric has enjoyed a glittering career since moving to Spain, winning the Champions League and Club World Cup on four occasions apiece.

He has also picked up two LaLiga titles, and Carlo Ancelotti's side will earn another championship if they get a point from their home match against Espanyol on Saturday.

The 36-year-old has lit up the international stage as well, captaining Croatia to the World Cup final in 2018. He would go on to win the Ballon d'Or later that year.

He has shown no signs of slowing down just yet, producing an exquisite assist to turn Real Madrid's Champions League quarter-final tie against Chelsea in their favour earlier this month.

The Spanish giants find themselves 4-3 down after the first leg of their semi-final clash with Manchester City, but Modric will be hoping to overhaul this deficit in the return match at the Bernabeu on Wednesday as he goes in search of his fifth Champions League trophy in the last eight years.
