Real Madrid loanee says he wants to return to club next season

Real Madrid may have to make some decisions this summer regarding a few of their loanees. Brahim Diaz and Alvaro Odriozola are two players who could remain in Serie A after their loans to Milan and Fiorentina, respectively.

Reinier definitely needs a new home after two terrible seasons with Dortmund in which he never really got to play. Takefusa Kubo may need a new challenge other than Mallorca, too.

But the most intriguing decision will pertain to Real Madrid’s most successful loanee, Borja Mayoral. After a great season with Roma in 2020/21, Mayoral was displaced by Tammy Abraham and unwanted by former Madrid manager Jose Mourinho.

Roma agreed to end his loan, and Real sent Mayoral back to LaLiga, where he has returned to his exceptional goal-scoring form with local rivals Getafe, already finding the back of the net six times as Enes Unal’s partner in crime.

In a recent interview with Marcos Benito of El Chiringuito, Borja Mayoral stated that he wants to go back to Real Madrid.

That statement is not binding, but it should definitely open up the discussion regarding Mayoral’s future. Before he was loaned to Roma in 2020/21, Zinedine Zidane seemed to prefer the striker to Luka Jovic, whose status at Madrid has since fallen even more this season under Carlo Ancelotti.

Mayoral could be the backup striker to Karim Benzema. He has experience in LaLiga, putting up quality numbers with both Levante and now Getafe. And he has a more well-rounded game than Jovic, who was too slow and stagnant to fit Real Madrid. Hence why even Marco Asensio and Gareth Bale have been preferred by Carlo Ancelotti as false nines.

We’ll see what Carlo thinks about Mayoral or if other striker options emerge. Raul de Tomas is a dream target for many Madridistas, but a reunion may not be logical if Espanyol stick to their transfer demand of 30-40 million euros. RDT, after all, is one of the best strikers in LaLiga.

But so is Mayoral, judging by what we have seen so far this half-season with one of the league’s worst teams in Getafe. Mayoral is also free. So if he is OK with being a backup player, Real Madrid could do a LOT worse than sticking with him.
