Real Madrid's new transfer strategy: Experience at zero cost

David Alaba and Antonio Rudiger represent a shift.

Real Madrid are once again dipping into a transfer strategy that proved highly successful last year with the signing of David Alaba.

The Austrian lived up to expectations, which were high, over the course of the recently completed season, and the club are hoping for a repeat with the signing of Antonio Rudiger.

It's safe to say that just like Alaba, Madrid aren't taking a huge gamble with the German. Both played at top clubs and won European honours before joining the Spanish club. Alaba was a two-time Champions League winner with Bayern Munich before adding a third with Madrid this year, while Rudiger won his with Chelsea in 2020/21 after getting past Zinedine Zidane's men in the semi-finals.

Madrid have managed to sign two proven players on free transfers, though it doesn't mean they come at no cost.

High profile players that leave their clubs at the end of their contracts receive big signing bonuses, with Alaba netting close to 18 million euros from his deal.

That means the Austrian didn't join for free, but rather, well below his market value, which was around 60-65 million euros. Rudiger's value, meanwhile, is said to be around 50 million euros.

Madrid have opted to focus on free transfers due to volatility caused by clubs owned by states, like Paris Saint-Germain, who are now a rival when it comes to the signing of Monaco's Aurelien Tchouameni. This has also resulted in Madrid turning to younger talent, which was evident last season.

Vinicius, Federico Valverde and Rodrygo all played key roles, though the two Br azilians weren't exactly cheap, costing Madrid around 45 million euros each. As for Valverde, the Uruguayan was an absolute bargain at just 5m euros.

Targeting free transfers doesn't always work out of course, as Madrid's biggest target was Kylian Mbappe.

Los Blancos did all that they could to sign the French striker, even offering PSG 200 million euros last summer, which was an astronomical figure for a player with just one year remaining on his contract.

It's well known how things have played out, with the French club turning down the offer against Mbappe's wishes. However, in the end, PSG's work in convincing the French striker to stay worked, as he recently signed a new three-year contract.
