Real Madrid have second thoughts about Timo Werner move

La Liga champions Real Madrid are reportedly reconsidering their decision to launch the offensive to sign Timo Werner from Chelsea this summer.

According to a report by Spanish outlet Fichajes, Real Madrid might not submit an offer to sign Timo Werner in the summer transfer window. The reigning La Liga champions have second thoughts about signing the Chelsea misfit, who might not accept the role of a backup striker in the 2022/23 season.

Timo Werner has suffered a fall from grace since joining Chelsea from RB Leipzig nearly two years ago. The German international had arrived at Stamford Bridge on the back of an excellent 2019/20 campaign with Leipzig but has failed to match the numbers of that term in the two seasons he has spent with Chelsea.

The 26-year-old has only managed a sub-par tally of 23 goals and 21 assists in 89 appearances thus far for Chelsea. And with the 2022 FIFA World Cup just a few months away, Werner is considering departing from Stamford Bridge to seek regular game-time and stake claim for a spot in the German national team. Such a situation has piqued the interest of Real Madrid.

Real Madrid seemed to have finished the incoming summer transfer business after signing former Chelsea defender Antonio Rudiger and ex-AS Monaco prodigy Aurelien Tchouameni, with Carlo Ancelotti insisting they were not going to bring in any more players in the ongoing window. But things have changed in the last few days.

Borja Mayoral, Marco Asensio, and Mariano Diaz face uncertain futures at Real Madrid, with Mayoral reportedly closing in on joining Getafe. And Real Madrid will delve into the market for a striker if Asensio and Diaz also depart from the Santiago Bernabeu, bringing Werner into the picture.

Recent reports have claimed that Real Madrid will only sign Werner on loan to do away with the risk of being stuck with an underperformer. But according to Fichajes, the Spanish champions have second thoughts about launching the offensive for Werner due to various factors.

But Werner will not have a shortage of suitors pursuing him, with widespread reports linking the Chelsea misfit with Newcastle United, RB Leipzig, and Juventus. So even if the 26-year-old does not find a home at Real Madrid, he will have plenty of options to consider.
