According to Mario Cortegana on Radio MARCA, Real Madrid are inching closer to agreeing a contract renewal agreement with Marco Asensio.
The 26-year-old looked like he had one foot out of the door at the Santiago Bernabeu not so long ago as his contract expires at the end of the season and a renewal was nowhere in sight.
However, things have changed quite dramatically with regard to his standing in Carlo Ancelotti’s plans in recent weeks. Asensio has made a good impression with his performances and was one of Real Madrid’s standout performers in the recent win against Celtic.
The Spaniard’s attitude and his performances have seemingly convinced the Real Madrid officials to negotiate a new deal with the Spanish international so as to prolong his stay at the club beyond the ongoing campaign.
Reports indicate that Los Blancos will negotiate with Asensio’s agent, Jorge Mendes, during the World Cup break, but as things stand they are much closer to reaching an agreement with the winger than they were back in the summer.
However, Cortegana adds that there will not be a major improvement on Asensio’s current salary in his new deal as he continues to remain Real Madrid’s fifth-choice attacker behind Karim Benzema, Rodrygo Goes, Vinicius Jr and Federico Valverde, who has excelled on the right flank.
It is also stated that despite wanting to extend Asensio’s contract, Real Madrid continue to prioritise the evolution and development of young guns like Vinicius and Rodrygo.
Asensio has scored three goals and set up two more in just 336 minutes of football across all competitions this term, proving that he can be a valuable member of the team. And it seems like his recent performances will be rewarded with a new deal.
