Real Madrid were dealt a fresh injury blow on Tuesday as key player Thibaut Courtois, on the verge of returning from his ACL rupture, suffered a fresh knee injury.
The 31-year-old tore the meniscus of his right knee during a training session last evening which means that he is now staring at another stint on the sidelines.
Even though Courtois’ new injury was not as serious as it was feared initially, when he left the training ground in tears, the Belgian superstar needed surgery.
And earlier today, Real Madrid confirmed in an official statement that the 31-year-old goalkeeper has undergone an operation.
"Our player Thibaut Courtois underwent successful surgery today for a tear in the internal meniscus of his right knee under the supervision of the Real Madrid Medical Services," the statement read.
" Courtois will begin his recovery process in the coming days."
Building on the official update from the club, Mario Cortegana reports that Courtois will now be sidelined for a period of two months.
As per the update, Courtois’ surgery was performed by Dr. Manuel Leyes who previously operated on the Belgian after his ACL rupture in August last year. The same doctor did the surgeries on Eder Militao and Arda Guler.
Now, following the surgery, Courtois is staring at another two months out on the sidelines, and is likely to kiss goodbye to the ongoing season.
Real Madrid play their last La Liga game on May 26 and it is unlikely Courtois will be ready and in shape by then.
In light of Courtois’ latest injury setback, Real Madrid have reportedly decided to hand Andriy Lunin a new contract, with his current one expiring in 2025.
