Primera Liga reports

Brief reports of Primera Liga matches played on Sunday:

ATHLETIC BILBAO 2 VILLARREAL 0

Athletic bounced back from last week's embarrassing first round exit in the King's Cup at the hands of third division opponents by inflicting a first defeat of the season on Benito Floro's Villarreal.

Keeper Daniel Aranzubia kept the Basque side in the match early on, but centre forward Ismael Urzaiz put them ahead with a hallmark header at the far post six minutes after the break.

Winger Joseba Etxeberria made sure of victory when he clipped the ball over keeper Pepe Reina after a neat dinked pass from Urzaiz nine minutes from time.

ATLETICO MADRID 2 REAL MALLORCA 1

A superbly struck last-gasp free kick from substitute midfielder Jorge gave Atletico a home win against fellow strugglers Mallorca.

Fernando Torres put the home side in front with a glancing header on 27 minutes, but opposite number Samuel Eto'o equalised before the break when he outpaced the Atletico defence and slotted past keeper German Burgos.

In a frantic second half both sides had a host of scoring opportunities, but it was Jorge's dramatic intervention that allowed Gregorio Manazno to get one over his former side.

OSASUNA 2 MURCIA 1

Goals at either end of the game from Ivory Coast striker Ibrahima Bakayoko and a double sending off for Murcia ensured that Osasuna retained their surprise fourth place in the table.

Bakayoko turned sharply before drilling in at the far post to put the Navarrans ahead on 11 minutes, but Murcia were back on level terms when forward Luis Garcia tapped in following a fumble by keeper Juantxo Elia.

But the result of the game hinged on the dismissals of Murcia players Lluis Carreras and Daniel Jensen late on in the game. Bakayoko took immediate advantage of the extra space to grab the winner four minutes from time.

RACING SANTANDER 4 MALAGA 2

Lucas Alcaraz's Racing went behind after former player Salva Ballesta pounced on a deflected shot on 20 minutes.

But Fernando Moran equalised with an angled shot soon after the break, Israeli forward Yossi Benayoun put Racing ahead two minutes later when he netted with a stylish free kick and former youth team player Jonathan made it 3-1 with fine solo effort soon after.

Striker Rodolfo Bodipo added a fourth with a cheeky backheel, while Croatian midfielder Ivan Leko scored a late consolation for Malaga from a well-taken free kick.

REAL ZARAGOZA 1 VALLADOLID 0

Former Real Madrid forward Savio secured a second win of the season for Zaragoza with a sharp finish after 16 minutes.

The Br azilian toe-poked in from six metres out after David Villa had carved open the Valladolid defence with a pacy diagonal run and pass.

Zaragoza were reduced to 10 men when Argentine midfielder Leonardo Ponzio was dismissed after picking up a second booking early in the second half.

SEVILLA 2 REAL BETIS 2

Home side Sevilla took the lead early in the second half when talented young forward Jose Antonio Reyes netted at the far post with an acrobatic volley, but city rivals Betis were back on level terms within two minutes thanks to a sharp header from Br azilian winger Denilson.

Eight minutes later the visitors were in front as striker Tote scored with a powerful diving header, but Sevilla substitute Antonito equalised with a magnificent solo effort when he wrong-footed the Betis defence before firing into the far corner.

VALENCIA 4 ESPANYOL 0

A devastating performance from Rafa Benitez's men allowed them to reclaim top spot from overnight leaders Deportivo.

Valencia were gifted an early lead when Mista guided home into the empty net after a deflected clearance ended up at his feet on the edge of the area.

Midfielder Ruben Baraja scored in added time at the end of the first half and Mista got his double a minute later. Winger Vicente completed a great team performance when he cracked in 11 minutes from time.

Played Saturday:

ALBACETE 3 REAL SOCIEDAD 1

Three goals in 12 second-half minutes gave Albacete a surprise win over last season's runners-up.

French midfielder Ludovic Delporte put Albacete in front with a fine near-post header after 67 minutes, but Sociedad levelled five minutes later when Nihat Kahveci netted with a thundering volley from 12 metres.

Albacete midfielder David Sanchez put the home side ahead 15 minutes from time when he beat Sander Westerveld with a brilliantly executed 22-metre lob. The goalkeeper was caught off his line again when Carlos Aranda scored from close range after his lob had bounced on to the line after hitting the bar.

BARCELONA 0 DEPORTIVO CORUNA 2

Barcelona-born players Albert Luque and Sergio scored in each half to give a well-organised Depor a valuable away win over the Catalans, who have yet to record a victory at the Nou Camp in the league this season.

Luque got his foot to a fine curling pass from defender Joan Capdevila to put Depor ahead on 41 minutes and former Espanyol midfielder Sergio made sure of the win when he drilled in from the edge of the area on 70 minutes after Juan Carlos Valeron had carved open the Barca defence.

CELTA VIGO 0 REAL MADRID 2

Br azilian duo Ronaldo and Roberto Carlos earned Real victory for the third year in a row at Balaidos against a disappointing Celta.

World Player of the Year Ronaldo opened with a typically efficient finish midway through the first half after a slick counter-attack involving Zinedine Zidane and Luis Figo.

Celta threatened to work their way back into the game after the break, but then defender Roberto Carlos smashed in from close range after cutting inside right back Juan Velasco on 65 minutes.
