Primera Liga reports

Brief reports of final round Primera Liga matches played on Sunday:

ATLETICO MADRID 2 GETAFE 2

Getafe took the lead in the Madrid derby when former Atletico player David Cubillo scored from the penalty spot after centre-back Pablo Ibanez had tripped Romanian Gica Craioveanu in the area midway through the first half.

Uruguayan striker Richard Nunez scored his first goal for Atletico when he volleyed home just after the break but Craioveanu celebrated postponing his retirement when he put Getafe 2-1 up after some great work by Angel Vivar Dorado.

Nunez saved Atletico's blushes with an injury-time equaliser when he blasted in from 20 metres.

ESPANYOL 2 ATHLETIC BILBAO 0

Espanyol completed their best season in nine years with a home win that guaranteed them a fifth-place finish and a place in the UEFA Cup.

The Catalans took the lead when midfielder Toni Velamazan steered into the open net after Argentine striker Maxi Rodriguez had burst through the Bilbao defence, drawn the keeper and then laid the ball into his path in the 33rd minute.

Defender Albert Lopo added a second when he took advantage of some slack defending to send a bullet header into the net after an Ivan de la Pena corner at the start of the second half.

Defender Daniel Jarque's 67th-minute red card did little to dampen the Espanyol celebrations.

NUMANCIA 1 DEPORTIVO CORUNA 1

In what may be Javier Irureta's last game in charge, Depor salvaged something from a disappointing season with a lucky draw that allowed them to qualify for the Intertoto Cup.

Forward Luis Tevenet gave already relegated Numancia the lead from the penalty spot after 49 minutes, but the Galicians drew level when defender Juanpa headed into his own net 10 minutes later.

RACING SANTANDER 1 ALBACETE 0

Doomed Albacete left the top flight with a disappointing away defeat that ensured they finished bottom of the table.

Racing striker David Aganzo grabbed the winner 12 minutes before the break when he headed home from six metres after defender Pedro Lopez floated in a fine cross from the right.

REAL MALLORCA 1 REAL BETIS 1

Betis secured their best league finish in a decade and a Champions League place, while opponents Mallorca hung on to their top flight status by the skin of their teeth.

Br azilian dead ball expert Marcos Assuncao put Betis ahead when he curled a 20-metre free kick over the wall and beyond the despairing Luis Moya at the start of the second half.

A late equaliser from Argentine midfielder Guillermo Pereyra finally allowed the islanders to rest easy.

SEVILLA 0 MALAGA 2

Sevilla missed out on a Champions League place and had to settle for the UEFA Cup after this defeat at home by fellow Andalucians Malaga.

Portugal midfielder Duda opened the scoring with an unstoppable free kick 15 minutes from time and Br azilian striker Fernando Baiano put the result beyond doubt when he steered in at the far post in injury time.

VALENCIA 1 OSASUNA 0

Argentine midfielder Pablo Aimar got the winner against King's Cup finalists Osasuna as he headed in at the second attempt after good work by Francisco Rufete nine minutes from time.

But the victory was not enough to give last season's champions a UEFA Cup spot and they had to settle instead for a place in the Intertoto.

VILLARREAL 4 LEVANTE 1

This result earned Villarreal a Champions League place for the first time and sent Levante down after just a season in the top flight.

Levante looked as though they might stage a dramatic escape after they took a shock lead through Argentine striker Gustavo Reggi, but Villarreal dashed their hopes when midfielder Josico headed home after a neat dinked pass from Juan Roman Riquelme.

Former Manchester United striker Forlan made it 2-1 when he slid in at the far post on the stroke of halftime after Rodolfo Arruabarrena headed a Riquelme free kick across the goal.

The Uruguayan then notched his 25th of the season and became top scorer in Spain with a classy strike from the edge of the area before completing a dream night by setting up fellow striker Luciano Figueroa for the fourth goal in stoppage time.

Played Saturday:

REAL SOCIEDAD 0 BARCELONA 0

Barcelona, resting a number of players, struggled against a Sociedad side who came closest to scoring early in the game when the ball hit the bar after rebounding off Barca defender Oleguer Presas.

Sociedad's Russian midfielder Valery Karpin, playing his last game before retiring from the game, received a standing ovation when he was substituted near the end.

REAL ZARAGOZA 1 REAL MADRID 3

Real Madrid at least finished their second successive season without a major trophy on a high note, overcoming a spirited Zaragoza side to extend their unbeaten run to 10 matches.

Michael Owen scored an opportunist strike in the first half to take his total for the season to 13 goals after Zaragoza keeper Luis Garcia spilled a shot from Zinedine Zidane.

Zaragoza midfielder Oscar equalised with a well-worked goal just before halftime, but Roberto Carlos drilled home Madrid's second at the end of a fine move soon after the break and Garcia then gifted Ronaldo his 21st goal of the season with another error near the end.
