Barcelona coach Carles Rexach has rounded on his team after their embarrassing exit from the King's Cup at the hands of third division Figueres.
A goal from striker Kali
Garrido just a minute into the first period of extra time ensured a 1-0 defeat of the first division giants and triggered wild celebrations at the humble Catalan club.
"We made fools of ourselves and when you do that you lose," Rexach told reporters after the match.
"Today from start to finish we did everything badly. The players weren't up to the job and I am very angry about it."
"It takes time to recover from these type of defeats. Barcelona should win against Figueres or against any team from the third division. The failure is all of our own making," he added.
Rexach's disappointment in his team's performance contrasted with the delight of Figueres coach Pedro Gratacos.
"The victory is a dream come true for Figueres," he said.
"It is a reward for the superhuman effort of my players and is the result of all the hard work we have done this week."
The shock defeat, which comes just days after Barcelona were outplayed by arch-rivals Real Madrid at the Bernabeu, is a severe blow to the hopes of the Catalan club who have not won a major trophy in the last two seasons.
Despite the absence of Rivaldo and Patrick Kluivert, Barcelona still fielded a strong line-up against Figueres that included teenage striker
Javier Saviola and speedy Dutch winger Marc Overmars.
But once again the players were unable to prove that they can perform without the influential presence of Rivaldo and never seriously threatened to impose their authority on their lowly opponents.
Barcelona vice president Angel Fernandez was unable to conceal his anger at the team's performance.
"This is unacceptable," he told reporters.
"The fans of the club don't deserve this. Figueres have given us a lesson in humility, while the Barca players were just not up to the demands of the occasion," he said.
The Spanish press also spared no criticism for the team.
"Shameful knockout," read the frontpage headline in Barcelona-based sports daily El Mundo Deportivo.
"Figueres eliminated an awful Barcelona who were incapable of scoring a single goal in 120 minutes of football," said the paper, whose damning comments were echoed by all the other major sporting papers.
Barcelona joined seven other first division teams who also crashed out at the first hurdle in this season's competition.
Cup holders Real Zaragoza, 1999 winners Espanyol, Real Sociedad, Tenerife, Sevilla and Real Betis also made early exits at the hands of third division opposition.
Valencia were added to the list of casualties when they were eliminated after fielding an ineligible team in their 1-0 defeat of Novelda.
The Mediterranean club have, however, asked for next week's draw for the third round of the competition to be postponed pending their appeal against their expulsion.
