Real Madrid forward Marco Asensio has responded to speculations surrounding his future at the club amid rumours of a summer exit.
Speaking to AS, Real Madrid star Marco Asensio has dismissed the notion that he will be leaving the club this summer amid question marks over his future at the Santiago Bernabeu.
A product of the Real Mallorca youth academy, Asensio was snapped up by Real Madrid in the summer of 2014. Having slowly grown in stature with the Merengues, the Spaniard became a key figure at the club around the 2017/18 campaign before a serious injury curtailed his progress. And, safe to say, since returning from the injury, Asensio has failed to make the kind of impact he was known for.
Indeed, the 2020/21 campaign saw the 25-year-old produce a paltry tally of just seven goals and two assists from 48 appearances across all competitions. His inability to produce the goods in the final third have led to serious questions over his future at the club, with reports even claiming that Real Madrid are open to selling him, having slapped a €50 million price tag on him this summer.
Asensio, when quizzed on the matter ahead of his involvement at the Tokyo Olympic Games, claimed that he is confident that his future lies in the Spanish capital. "Yes, for sure. My intention is to continue at Real Madrid, to be great here and to contribute as best as I can. I feel that I still have a lot to give the club."
"As many already know, I’m a Madridista and I have been since I was little. I live this club, beyond just being a player, I really feel both victories and defeats. It’s from the heart," the Spanish international said.
Asensio further revealed that he had already spoken to new manager Carlo Ancelotti, insisting that things will get better for him under the Italian. "I had a little chat with [ Ancelotti]. He gave me a very good feeling, he has very clear ideas. He’s a coach who’s been at the greatest clubs in the world and has enjoyed good spells with each. He has a lot of experience and I’m sure I can learn a lot from him."
While Asensio remains sure about his future at the Santiago Bernabeu, it remains to be seen if the club feel the same way as well, considering that they have been linked with a number of wide players this summer, including Liverpool’s Sadio Mane.
