Real Madrid’s summer signing and his competitor could line up together next season

Real Madrid’s pursuit of Trent Alexander-Arnold is shaping up to be one of the most exciting transfers, and everything points to the full-back’s arrival in the summer.

According to a report from Toni Munar in SPORT, however, there is a strong possibility that the Liverpool defender could share the pitch with Dani Carvajal in the same starting XI.

The English right-back, who recently confirmed his departure from Anfield after spending his entire career at Liverpool, is set to become Real Madrid’s first signing for the upcoming season.

He has expressed his eagerness to prove himself in a new environment, believing that a fresh start at a club like Real Madrid will allow him to unlock his full potential.

Despite all that, his defensive capabilities remain a concern. Known more for his attacking prowess as a wing-back than his defending, Alexander-Arnold has often struggled against fast and tricky wingers.

In his time at Liverpool, he even played in a double pivot, leaving his defensive duties to the more defensively-minded players.

With Lucas Vazquez expected to leave after the FIFA Club World Cup, Real Madrid will need to find a solution at right-back.

Although the pairing of Carvajal and Alexander-Arnold may seem unlikely at first, they could complement each other well, given their differing playing styles.

Alexander-Arnold’s attacking quality could be utilised in matches where Madrid dominate possession and look to break down their opponent.

This way, he can be utilised as a deep midfielder, a role he has played at Liverpool, and at the same time, Carvajal can retain his place on the right.

Furthermore, the Spaniard’s defensive strengths would also make him the key choice in matches against teams with powerful wingers.

An interesting twist to this scenario is the potential arrival of Xabi Alonso as the new Madrid manager.

The coach, known for playing with a system that uses three centre-backs and wing-backs, could provide Alexander-Arnold with a role that minimises his defensive responsibilities.

This formation could be an ideal fit for the Englishman, offering him the freedom to push forward while relying on other players to cover defensively.
