Chelsea's Robben takes Real Madrid spending to £80M

Real Madrid coach Bernd Schuster intends to rush new signing Arjen Robben into his starting XI for Saturday's big Liga opener against city rivals Atletico.

Robben will be in Madrid today to be paraded in front of local media and fans after Real had a £24 million bid accepted by Chelsea yesterday. The Holland international will ink a five-year contract.

Real sports chief Pedja Mijatovic struck terms with his Chelsea counterpart Peter Kenyon at 8pm last night after an earlier attempt to bring down the price by including Cicinho in their offer was rejected.

The first man Mijatovic contacted after shaking hands with Kenyon last night was Real coach Bernd Schuster, who had asked for Robben's capture to be made a priority.

Robben's arrival brings Real's summer spending to over £78 million and he joins Pepe, Javier Saviola, Christophe Metzelder, Wesley Sneijder, Royston Drenthe, Jerzy Dudek and Gaby Heinze as new signings at Madrid.

The winger hasn't featured for Chelsea this season, but Schuster intends to run the rule over him in training today with the intention of playing him from the start against Atletico.
