Real Madrid were not a good watch on Wednesday night, when they lost to PSG 4-0 in a really humiliating fashion.
Real Madrid were simply not good enough. It was clear as soon as the match kicked off, and it only became more and more obvious as it went on.
They ended up conceding four goals in a horrible match, and there were more than one things to blame.
And that is what Xabi Alonso did. He talked about the things Real Madrid did wrong, as well as what he could learn from the loss.
Particularly, one quote stood out to me from his entire press conference, which was about 'changes'. He is certain of it. More than ever. Real Madrid will undergo a series of changes, but it was not made clear what sort of changes he was talking about.
He said: "I now know certain things for certain, I know some facts. There will be changes."
It could well be a warning sign to a few players who are out of order at the club. Maybe Real Madrid's new manager has the players in mind that he wants out - maybe the likes of Raul Asencio, who have performed poorly in the competition - or maybe it is the ones that he did not play, like Rodrygo.
Maybe it is about Real Madrid wanting to play differently. Maybe they want to sign some players. It was not made clear by the Spanish manager after the loss.
That could mean all sorts of things. But, in a general landscape, Alonso is right. He is absolutely bang on.
If they want to keep competing at the top, Real Madrid will have to change the way they handle themselves on and off the pitch.
They would want to get the entire team to press, rather than just nine or 10 players. They will need to sell some players that have given them good things in the past. They will have to spend some more money even if they don't want to.
That is essentially what greatness calls for. You need to make sacrifices. Investments. Risks. You need to give your all to win everything on a consistent basis, and that is something Real Madrid will hopefully work on under Alonso.
