La Liga heavyweights Real Madrid are reportedly pondering re-signing 25-year-old Spanish international Sergio Reguilon in a €40 million deal.
According to a report by Spanish publication ABC, Sergio Reguilon has emerged on Real Madrid’s radar over a possible move in the summer transfer window. The La Liga heavyweights have an option to re-sign the Spanish international for €40 million, with the clause expiring in June.
Sergio Reguilon spent most of his formative years with Real Madrid before earning his first-team breakthrough in the 2018/19 season. Julen Lopetegui and Santiago Solari fancied him a lot in that campaign, but upon Zinedine Zidane’s return, the Spaniard lost his place in the side. The 25-year-old was eventually loaned out to Sevilla in July 2019 following Ferland Mendy’s arrival.
After a solid 2019/20 campaign with Sevilla, Real Madrid sold Reguilon to Tottenham Hotspur in September 2020. But the Spanish international has struggled to reach the heights of his solitary season at Sevilla due to the instability at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, as four different managers have taken charge of the club in that time.
Reguilon has remained the primary option at left-back for his managers at Tottenham but has been inconsistent in his 58 appearances for the club. But despite blowing hot and cold in the Premier League, the 25-year-old remains on Real Madrid’s radar, with Los Blancos considering a summer move for him.
The interest from Real Madrid comes in the wake of the uncertainties surrounding the futures of Marcelo and Miguel Gutierrez. While Marcelo will leave Real Madrid as a free agent in the summer, possibly to return to Br azil, Gutierrez has found himself in a similar situation as Reguilon nearly three years ago.
With Ferland Mendy the only other natural left-back at Carlo Ancelotti’s disposal, Real Madrid must sign a left-back to compete with the Frenchman. To that end, the Merengues have identified three possible solutions to their problems, with Reguilon featuring on top of their wishlist.
Apart from Reguilon, Jose Gaya and Angelino also feature on Real Madrid’s radar, although they would prefer re-signing the Tottenham defender as he already knows the demands of the club. Real Madrid can bring the 25-year-old Spanish international back to the Santiago Bernabeu by paying €40 million, although the clause expires in June.
The Spanish giants thus have a big decision to make in the coming months, and it will be interesting to see if they re-sign Reguilon in a €40 million deal in the summer transfer window.
