Chelsea weighing up January move for out-of-contract Real Madrid stalwart

Antonio Rudiger’s future at Real Madrid has suddenly become one of the most discussed topics surrounding the club.

Despite being one of the most reliable defenders since his arrival in 2022, the German centre-back now finds himself in a complicated position.

His physical drop-off, combined with the emergence of younger defenders pushing for starting roles, has raised questions about whether he will remain in the Spanish capital beyond this season.

Rudiger’s contract situation adds even more uncertainty. His deal expires at the end of the current campaign, and for months the general expectation within the club has been that he may depart for free, just as he arrived from Chelsea.

While he continues to perform at a high level when fit, the long-term planning at the club, along with the age profile of the squad, has sparked internal debate about whether renewing him fits Real Madrid’s future strategy.

Interestingly, there has been a new twist in the tale concerning the German.

A recent report from Fichajes claims that Chelsea have stepped forward as the strongest candidate to bring the defender back, and the negotiations have been ongoing quietly for several weeks.

According to the information, Chelsea have been in direct contact with both the player’s entourage and Real Madrid to explore the feasibility of a January transfer rather than waiting until the summer.

The relationship between Rudiger and the London club has always been positive, and his departure in 2022 left an impression that he might one day return.

Chelsea have reportedly made an opening proposal of around €8 million. Although the offer confirms their intent, it falls short of Real Madrid’s expectations.

From the club’s perspective, the figure does not reflect Rudiger’s current value, even with his contract running down.

At the same time, Madrid’s management is fully aware that declining a January sale could mean losing him for nothing at the end of the season.
