Xabi Alonso lost part of the Real Madrid dressing room over Luka Modric’s exi

More details continue to emerge following Xabi Alonso’s sacking at Real Madrid, with a keen focus on the dressing room.

Transfer market specialist Fabrizio Romano has provided important context, revealing that Alonso’s relationship with the players was far from smooth right from the beginning of his tenure.

According to Romano, the bond between Alonso and parts of the squad never truly settled.

While the club publicly backed the former midfielder and spoke about a long-term project, internally, there were clear signs of discomfort.

It is said that even during his early tenure, some senior players struggled to connect with Alonso’s ideas and decisions, which slowly created distance between the coach and the dressing room.

One particular episode left a strong mark. Part of the squad was unhappy with how Luka Modric’s situation was handled.

The Croatian legend was fully prepared to stay at the club for one more season. He was even willing to accept a different contract, fully aware that his role would change and that minutes would be reduced.

For Modric, it was about continuing at the club he considers home, helping the younger players, and contributing whenever needed.

However, both Alonso and the club hierarchy decided to move in a different direction. The focus was placed on youth, energy, and building a new midfield core for the future.

While that decision made sense from a sporting perspective, it did not sit well with everyone inside the dressing room.

Modric’s influence, leadership, and presence were deeply respected, and seeing him pushed aside created unease among several players.

At the same time, Alonso was growing frustrated with the squad he had at his disposal.

As previously reported, he felt the midfield lacked a true organiser.

As a result, he repeatedly told the club that his system needed a player who could control tempo, provide structure, and guide the team in possession.

As documented before, that player, however, never arrived.
