Manchester City superstar is playing his way out of a Real Madrid move

Real Madrid have turned a tide under caretaker manager Alvaro Arbeloa and their best win of the season came in a 6-1 thrashing of Monaco.

Los Blancos ran riot at the Estadio Bernabeu in the Champions League on Tuesday night.

Before Madrid secured their fifth win of their European campaign one of the biggest shocks took place. Manchester City suffered a humiliating 3-1 loss to Norweigan outfit Bodo/Glimt.

Pep Guardiola's Sky Blues have been in worrying form as of late and lost 2-0 to rivals Manchester United in the derby last weekend. Their recent nosedive has coincided with the return of Rodri who had been sidelined with a hamstring injury.

Rodri returned in January when City were breathing down Arsenal's necks in the title race. But since he was brought back into Guardiola's team, the Cityzens haven't won a single league game drawing against Sunderland (0-0), Chelsea (1-1) and Brighton (1-1).

The loss to Bodo/Glimt was the worst defeat of their season and might have highlighted that Rodri is past his best. He was sent off shortly after Rayan Cherki got City back into the game.

Injuries have taken hold in recent years and that might have led to the Spanish midfielder regressing. Madrid have been linked with the 29-year-old but his recent displays should be evidence enough that he should be crossed off Florentino Perez's shortlist.

Talk of Rodri potentially joining Madrid has grown amid suggestions Guardiola might leave the Etihad in the summer. It's been claimed that the La Liga giants might look to "exploit" his contract situation with his current deal up in 2027.

But judging from his poor form as of late it would be a massive risk and he's not exactly going to come cheaply. City will point out he is a Ballon d'Or winner and his long list of achievements.

That means Madrid must look at other options and there are plenty of holding midfielders impressing this season. The club seems to be admirers of Crystal Palace's Adam Wharton and AZ Alkmaar's Kees Smit.

If Los Blancos want to get the chequebook out and make a mega-money signing to rebuild midfield, then the likes of Chelsea's Moises Caicedo should be considered. But if it's less of a priority for Perez then VfB Stuttgart's Angelo Stiller fits the bill.
