Real demolish hapless Swiss

A hat-trick from striker Edwin Congo fired Real Madrid to a 12-1 thrashing of Swiss outfit Nyonnais on Sunday evening.

The result is a huge boost for the Spaniards in the run-up to the start of La Liga on August 25.

Real coach Vicente Del Bosque utilized his classic 4-4-2 system but gave a surprise by including a handful of non-regulars in the starting line-up.

Carlos Sanchez, Oscar Minambres, Congo, Elvir Baljic, Dorado, Ognjenovic, Alvaro Benito, Julio Alvarez and Alberto Rivera all featured for the Spanish giants alongside first-team stars like Zinedine Zidane, Fernando Morientes, Steve McManaman, Ivan Campo and Pedro Munitis.

Real new boy Zidane opened the scoring for Real after just six minutes and the goals began to flow in with Steve McManaman, Oscar Minambers and Elvir Baljic giving the visitors a comfortable 4-0 cushion before half-time.

Real controlled the game against a hugely inferior rival and took advantage of some sloppy defending and atrocious goalkeeping by Nellen to add to the tally in the second-half.

Bosnian striker Baljic added his second seven minutes after the interval, Congo striking home the first of his four goals on the hour mark. Rivera made it 0-7 five minutes later, Congo added Real's eighth on 69 minutes and Alvaro, freshly back from injury, blasted home a 76th minute penalty, marking his come-back into the side.

Congo sealed his hat-trick 60 seconds later putting Real into double figures then grabbed his fourth goal of the game with 10 minutes of normal time remaining.

The Swiss bounced back to net a consolation goal, Joly beating reserve 'keeper Carlos Sanchez in the 82nd minute and the Real goal fest was wrapped up just before the final whistle by Pedro Munitis, whose effort made it 1-12 to Real. The result is a great boost for Real Madrid and despite the fact that Nyonnais were not the most potent of rivals, Del Bosque will be pleased with the quality shown by his players including those who have little chance of playing in the team next season.
