Real Madrid 'keeper Iker Casillas
made a claim for the coveted number one jersey with his superb display against Montpellier on Wednesday.
The 20-year-old pulled off a string of world class saves to help Real to take the game 1-0 and secure the Ciudad de Alicante trophy. Casillas
has left team coach Vicente Del Bosque
in no doubt as to who should wear the number one jersey, formerly owned by ousted keeper Bodo Illgner
, next season.
told reporters on Friday: "I've spent my whole life dreaming about wearing the number one jersey for Real Madrid - the proper goalkeeper's shirt. Now that Bodo's gone it came up for grabs and I've claimed it due to being the first choice keeper. But that's not to take anything away from the other two goalies, Cesar and Carlos Sanchez, in the end it was the boss' decision"
added that wearing the number one jersey won't mean that he will be the undisputed choice to guard the Real goal and that both he and reserve keeper Cesar Sanchez
will get opportunities to star in the team over the next 10 months.
