Rafa Benitez facing Real Madrid player backlash with rumours of a fallout with FIVE top stars

The Spaniard has come under intense scrutiny after Real Madrid failed to defeat local rivals Atletico in the Madrid derby on Sunday.

Rafa Benitez has had run-ins with five of his top players at Real Madrid - after they reportedly deemed his tactics as too negative.

The new Los Blancos boss has already received criticism from Cristiano Ronaldo, Sergio Ramos, James Rodriguez, Jese Rodriguez and Karim Benzema over his style of play, according to Marca.

Real failed to defeat local rivals Atletico in the Madrid derby on Sunday, drawing 1-1 to remain in second place in La Liga, despite leaders Villarreal's defeat to Bilbao.

Centre-back Ramos gave away the penalty which levelled the game, but insists that he is not bothered by Benitez's criticism.

Ramos told Marca : "It was a childish mistake, but I won't lose any sleep over it. Anything that Benitez has to say he can say when he sees me. I'm not concerned or bothered."

"We all make mistakes and we don't do it on purpose. Luckily Keylor was on hand and it didn't affect the final result. Just as people talk about my mistake, they'll talk about the substitutions."

But the problems for Benitez could lie deeper than just with Ramos, as players and fans alike have addressed their discontent at the former Liverpool boss's lack of ambition when they went 1-0 up.

French striker Benzema is becoming increasingly frustrated by Benitez's decisions after he was hauled off the pitch for the fifth time during the Spaniard's reign.

"It's true I'm fed up of being taken off," Benzema told AS. "It's true that the electronic board always shows the No 9. Ask Benitez why that is."

"I'm calm and will continue to work so I'm not always substituted. He took me off to get a result, for defensive reasons."

"Substitutions are what the coach decides, I'm just there to help my team-mates."

But Benitez has received backing from his Spanish compatriot Juan Mata, who does not believe that Benitez operates a negative style of play.

He believes that Benitez is measured in his thinking - and praises him for his best ever year at Chelsea.

"I don’t consider him to be a defensive coach — he’s methodical, strategic and prepares for matches very well," Mata told Cadena Ser from Spain’s Las Rozas base.

"When a Benitez team has to attack, they throw everything into it. He is a manager that lives for football ."

"I had a very good relationship with him. When he was Chelsea manager I had my best year and he gave me a lot of confidence."
