Man Utd set to open talks over £23m surprise Real Madrid transfer next week

Manchester United could look to sign Real Madrid forward James Rodriguez in the summer transfer window.

Manchester United could open talks with Real Madrid over a £23million transfer for James Rodriguez next week. The Red Devils are looking to add quality and depth to their squad this summer as they look to close the gap to Liverpool and Manchester City.

United will be the first team to move for the Colombian if Los Blancos put him up for sale.

Zinedine Zidane is ready to let Rodriguez leave as he is well down the pecking order at the Bernabeu.

Express Sport understands Real have met with the player's representatives and agreed he can leave.

They will accept offers in the region of £23m for the 29-year-old who has just one year left on his current contract.

United have been quick to react with the player's agent expecting talks to take place next week.

Rodriguez likes the idea of playing at Old Trafford after a loan spell at Bayern Munich but clubs in France and Italy are also interested in his signature.

A source close to the player, who can play as an attacking midfielder or on the wing, said: "He wants to go England rather than any other country."

Rodriguez made just 14 appearances for Real Madrid this season and is desperate to find a new club and reignite his career.

A lot could depend on United's final Premier League match of the campaign against Leicester on Sunday (4pm).

If Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side avoid defeat they will qualify for the Champions League making it easier to attract stars in the transfer window.

Ahead of the match, Solskjaer explained: "We’re looking forward to the game; we’ve given ourselves a good chance of being in the Champions League next year," Solskjaer told reporters via a video call on Friday.

"We can’t go into a game thinking about what the outcome could be. We just have to go and perform, and perform to a high enough level for us to get a result."

"We want to go there and dominate the game - we wanted to get to this position, having to go Leicester to need to beat them."

"We’re not going to change our approach. We want to go there to try to win the game."
